- Humana and startup insurance provider Oscar Health have entered into a strategic partnership that aims to provide commercial small business insurance to consumers in a nine-county area surrounding Nashville, TN.

The partnership merges Humana’s expertise in provider collaboration, coordinated care, and consumer wellness with Oscar Health’s technology and data supported approach to member engagement. Both organizations believe that the partnership will greatly improve the care of their beneficiaries.

“This partnership is about coming together to reimagine health care coverage for small businesses and their employees, with an emphasis on simplicity and the end-to-end consumer experience,” said Humana Group and Specialty Segment President Beth Bierbower. “It’s gratifying to work with a partner like Oscar that is equally committed to helping members achieve their best health.”

A new health insurance product will deliver a member-first experience through data-driven alerts from Oscar’s concierge team that help members manage their care. The plan includes 24/7 access to telemedicine, healthcare search tools, and a mobile platform for members to engage with their health.

“We started Oscar for Business to bring a seamless, consumer-focused health experience to more Americans, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to work with Humana to serve members in the Nashville area,” said Mario Schlosser, CEO and Co-Founder of Oscar Health. “Humana is an ideal partner for Oscar because of our shared commitment to innovation, technology, and our members.”

Both Humana and Oscar Health recognized Nashville as a prime location to launch the partnership because of the city’s growing recognition as a small business and health technology hotbed. The program will first focus on delivering commercial health insurance to businesses with 50 or fewer employees. Management of the partnership will consist of executive leadership committee formed equally between the two companies.

While Humana has established itself as a leader in the private payer marketplace, Oscar Health has emerged as a new player in the payer marketplace through other strategic partnerships.

Recently, Oscar Health and Aetna partnered with Cleveland Clinic and Sutter Health to create provider-based health plans by 2018.  Oscar’s Virtual Visit tool will allow members a no co-pay online visit feature that is accessible through mobile device, another way the emerging payer is attempting to bring consumer-first healthcare.
