Humana Shares Data on Economic Contributions in Florida

By - Throughout 2022, Humana provided a high level of financial support to the state of Florida, taking responsibility for many jobs and a large share of wages and taxes.
Recent news from Humana described its impact on the state of Florida throughout the year 2022, specifically by claiming to be the supplier of 288,000 jobs, $18 billion in income and wages, and $472 million in taxes, contributing a total of $48 billion.
More specifically, the organization provided for over 2.6 million health plan members in Florida through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Prescription Drug, Medicare supplement, commercial employer group, and TRICARE health plans. Humana is also responsible for delivering senior-focused primary care to over 140 Florida clinics, doing so under several brands. It also provides home care services through CenterWell Home Health, as well as pharmacy services through multiple channels.
“Humana has a long history of serving Florida and its people, and this analysis clearly demonstrates the significant and ongoing impact that Humana is having on our state’s economy,” said Ron Weeden, senior vice president and Humana Medicaid Division Leader, in a press release. “We at Humana are proud to be part of the fabric of this great state and of the important role we play not only economically, but also in improving the health of Floridians and our local communities.”
Humana also described its direct, indirect, and induced efforts in Florida. These include $23.4 billion in direct impacts related to short-term business activity and continuous economic activity, $13.8 billion in indirect impacts which refers to local firms affected by Humana purchasing materials or services from external firms, and $10.5 billion in induced impacts that derive from employee spending that Humana influenced.
The press release also described that, aside from its economic support, Humana takes care of the state by assisting nonprofits such as the Area Agency on Aging and the Boys and Girls Clubs. In 2020, Humana donated almost $2 million to community organizations and its employees volunteered almost 30,000 hours in total.
“The partnership between Humana and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast has provided resources and volunteers that directly support more than 3,000 youth in Northwest Florida,” said Leslie Mickles, vice president of financial advancement for Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast, in a press release. “This equates to youth who are equipped with lifelong strategies that promote wellness and healthy lifestyles.”
Similarly, in October 2022, Humana announced its plans to expand dental benefits under Medicare Advantage plans in Florida for 2023. Specifically, Medicare Advantage members enrolled in a Humana health maintenance organization or preferred provider organization plans would be able to access the Florida Goldplus Dental Network starting in 2023. This network encompasses 8,100 dentists throughout Florida and a nationwide network allowing members to obtain in-network care both inside and outside the state.
