By - The top payers with the highest enrollment numbers for Medigap, Medicaid, and Medicare Advantage (MA) are a unique mix of some of the largest commercial payers as well as smaller to mid-size insurers, a new report from AHIP reveals.
These three health programs cover roughly 78 million individuals nationwide, with Medicaid accounting for 49 million beneficiaries, followed by 17 million Medicare Advantage enrollees and 12 million individuals utilizing Medigap.
Several payers have expanded their offerings for Medicare Advantage to stay competitive during the current Medicare enrollment period, and maintain high enrollment figures for the administration of public programs.
The top twelve commercial payers offering Medigap, Medicaid, and MA plans are listed below in alphabetical order, with some entities flagged as leaders in more than one plan category.
Aetna
Aetna is a Medicare Advantage leader that has drastically expanded its MA offerings in several states. Many of its MA plans have received 4 or higher CMS star rating in 2018.
American Continental
American Continental is a Medigap insurance provider that is based out of Brentwood, TN. The insurer offers five Medigap plans including A, B, F, High-Deductible F plans, G, and Medigap N plans.
Anthem
Anthem BlueCross BlueShield is a leading payer in both MA and Medicaid plan enrollment. As one of the largest private payers in the country, Anthem continues to remain competitive in all sectors of the industry.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is a top five insurance provider of Medigap plans in the country.
Centene
The Centene Corporation recently received lower-than-expected star ratings on their MA offerings through California Health Net, but the payer has one of the largest Medicaid enrollment populations in the US.
Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC)
HCSC is a customer-owned health insurer that operates through four BCBS plans in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. HCSC is a leading Medigap insurer based on nationwide enrollment numbers.
Humana
Humana is another payer that leads the country in MA enrollment. It is one of several large payers offering low or zero premium Medicare Advantage plans for its beneficiaries.
Kaiser Permanente
Kaiser Permanente’s payer offerings are popular for Medicare Advantage enrollment. It is one of many payers that has offered five star MA plans.
Mutual of Omaha
Mutual of Omaha participates in several segments of finance and insurance, but has one of the highest national enrollment numbers for Medigap plans.
Molina Healthcare
Molina is not as large as other multi-state payers, but is in the top five of payers in the US for enrollment within Medicaid plans.
UnitedHealthcare
UnitedHealthcare is the only payer on the list that is in the top five for national enrollment of all three plan types: MA, Medicaid, and Medigap.
WellCare
Based out of Tampa, FL, WellCare specializes in providing government-sponsored care services and insurance and is in the top five payers nationwide that provide Medicaid coverage.
